The correct measurement of pails and lids is important because some lug cover lids
are not standard sizes. There are three measurements that are important for
These measurements are shown in the diagram on the left.
The lid measurement is the diameter of the flat part of the center of
the lie, inside the "curl" of the tabs. The standard sizes are:
216 mm (8-1/2") - Usually for containers 8 liters/2 gal. or less
286 mm (11-1/4") - Usually for containers over 8 liters/2 gal. and as large as
30 liters/7-1/2 gal.
355 mm (13-15/16") - Usually for quarter drums, 50 liters/16 gal.
The other important measurements are the outside measurement of the pail, including
the "chime" or rolled steel, and the inside measurement of the pail opening.
